- One of the biggest changes in Federal Financial Aid in a generation is happening for the 2017-2018 academic year. For students starting in the fall of 2017 and later the FAFSA may be filed as early as October 1 using tax information from the prior prior year: 2015 in the case of students attending college fall 2017.
